LACMA Art + Film Gala

LACMA Art + Film Gala

Neil Lane has been a long time admirer, collector and now, close friend, of Betye Saar. She is a pioneer in the contemporary art world, using the medium of assemblage to shift paradigms while visually telling stories addressing race and femininity in a unique and special way.

Ready to go for Betye's big night

On November 2, 2019, Neil had the privilege of escorting Betye as she was honored by the LACMA at the 9th annual Art+Film Gala which was co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio and LACMA trustee Eva Chow. Many other icons in the art, film, entertainment and fashion industries were also in attendance. Neil designed Betye's "Mystic Eye" brooch for the event to honor their friendship and her life's journey of creativity, spirituality and love of mysticism.

Saar currently has an exhibition at the LACMA entitled, "Call and Response" showcasing her whole career from sketchbooks to sculptural installations, until April 2020.

Additionally, Saar has an autobiographical assemblage exhibition at the MoMA - running until January 2020 - The Legends Of Black Girl's Window. Evoking tarot and astrological themes in her work, she even has mythical depictions in her To Catch A Unicorn such as a virgin taming a beast. The New Yorker recently proclaimed that Saar as an "overtly feminine way of processing uncertainty and disillusionment," and referred to her as "the conscience of the art world. Neil Lane couldn't agree more.
